SD2012 - Inaugural Asia Pacific Conference

The long-standing, successful Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) Sustainable Development Conference is an annual event held in the second half of each year in different locations around Australia.

The annual Conference is recognised as a leading minerals industry forum for communicating sustainable development and its practical implementation. The Conference focuses on various issues across MCA's social and environmental portfolios and attracts a varied audience of industry colleagues, community and environmental practitioners, non-government organisations, Indigenous leaders and representative bodies and government officials.

To recognise the extent to which our industry colleagues across the Asia Pacific region have embraced the concept of sustainable development, the MCA 2012 Sustainable Development Conference (SD2012) will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from 12-16 November 2012.

The Conference is being structured as an Asia Pacific region follow up to the 2002 Global Mining Initiative in Toronto. SD2012 will be an opportunity to demonstrate the extent of industry progress over the intervening decade in continuously improving its social, environmental and economic performance and outline the next steps in going forward. It would also represent 20 years since the original Rio World Summit on Sustainable Development.

The MCA has chosen to focus on the Asia Pacific region for the following reasons:

  • the high degree of exploration and mining activity undertaken by MCA member companies right across the Asia Pacific region;
  • the frequency with which the MCA is requested by both Governments and companies operating in the region to assist in the identification and development of effective regulatory and voluntary measures to support the sustainable development of mineral resources, particularly in developing countries; and
  • the interest and goodwill shown by a number of national mining associations in the region to work collaboratively in sharing knowledge and experience on good regulatory practice.

We see that SD2012 will build both industry and regulatory capacity in the implementation of, and legislative frameworks for, sustainable development in exploration, mining and minerals processing. Further, we see this as an opportunity to showcase regional leadership in safety and health, environmental management and community development, highlighting the benefits of effective regulatory frameworks and corporate leadership to deliver sustainable outcomes from the development of mineral resources.
